Week 5 Walking Outside
The homework is still the same on week 5 EXCEPT the walking outside will replace the exercises inside (which you can still do inside in bad weather and so on). Those exercises are grown up heel (usually at the beginning as we found out), Sits, Sit Stays, and Loose Leash with Slack if there is no tension and then stopping when there is tension. Also the leash behind the leg short cut when you want to expose your dog but they will only be interested in treats so long and they are not quite ready for a long adult heel walk.
NOTE: REMEMBER TO NOT LET YOUR DOG KNOW YOU ARE NERVOUS WHEN TRAINING. YOU WANT TO APPEAR CONFIDENT SO THAT YOUR NERVOUSNESS DOES NOT TRAVEL DOWN THE LEASH. DOING SOME DEEP BREATHS AND RELAXING YOUR SHOULDERS HELPS.
Maggie is our model for the moving when leash is slack and stopping when your dog puts tension on the leash:
Maggie is also our model for the leash behind the legs short cut (NOTE: NEVER DO THIS ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN A LEVEL SURFACE AND IF YOU HAVE BALANCE ISSUES YOU SHOULD NOT DO THIS AT ALL):
Again Maggie for practicing sits (also a way to slow the dog's role) with or without heel (either adult or lured):
