Week 6 Notes, Homework, and Videos

NO CHANGES FOR WEEK 4 NOTES:

NOTE 1:  YOU CAN START EXPERIMENTING WITH DRAGGING LEASH INSIDE FOR TRAINING.  ANYTIME YOU HAVE TROUBLE THOUGH, PICK UP THE LEASH FOR THOSE REPS.

NOTE 2:  DO NOT LEAVE TRAINING COLLAR OR TRAINING SLIP LEAD ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT ACTIVELY TRAINING YOUR DOG.

NOTE 3:  PLEASE PUT ON YOUR TRAINING COLLAR CORRECTLY.  ALSO BE SURE TO HOLD THE LEASH CORRECTLY.

This is a link to a leash article on our business blog.  Leashes How to Hold Them and How to Fold Them.

NOTE 4:  PRACTICE IN WITH DISTRACTIONS POSSIBLY PLANTED AT HOME OR WHILE DOING A TRAINING WALK.

NOTE 5:  THE GOALS ARE PLACES TO WORK TO IN THE FUTURE.  IF YOU DON'T MAKE THE GOAL, DON'T WORRY AS LONG AS YOU PUT IN THE WORK TOWARDS THE GOAL.  PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN CALL OR EMAIL ME WITH ANY TRAINING PROBLEMS THAT COME UP IN BETWEEN LESSONS.

NOTE 6:  IF YOU DON'T GET THROUGH ALL THE EXERCISES IN ONE DAY, YOU CAN JUST BE SURE THAT THE EXERCISES YOU DID NOT GET TO ARE DONE THE NEXT DAY.   THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE, I THINK, IS THE MOLDED SITS.   HOWEVER, THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER TO START TO CHANGE BEHAVIOR.

NOTE 7:  WHEN YOUR DOG WORKS WITH YOU AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GO DOWN IN TIME AND THEN BUILD BACK UP TO WHERE YOUR DOG WAS TRAINING WITH ME (IF YOU ARE IN PACK LEARNING AND BOARD & TRAIN).  THE DOG WILL WORK BETTER FOR WHOEVER THEY WERE LAST WORKING WITH, SO OFTEN THE TIME NEEDS TO BE BUILT UP BY THE OWNER TO HAVE THE SAME SORT OF WORKING RELATIONSHIP.

NOTE 8:  TRAINING CAN BE DONE IN SEPARATE SESSIONS.  I LIKE TO KEEP MY SESSIONS AT 15 MINUTES IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE DAY (EXCEPT FOR LONG PLACE).  OTHERWISE, YOU CAN BURN YOUR DOG OR PUPPY OUT.

NOTE 9:  MARKER WORDS ARE GOOD=GOOD JOB KEEP GOING YES=GOOD JOB YOU ARE RELEASED FROM THE EXERCISE AND NO=THAT IS NOT WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR.

NOTE 10:  BLUE TEXT GOES TO THE DIRECTIONS FOR THE EXERCISES.  [IT IS A LINK]

NOTE 11:  DON'T BECOME DISTRACTED BY YOUR DOG OR WHAT THEY ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO WHEN YOU ARE WORKING THEM.   REMEMBER THE RULES REMAIN THE SAME.  ALSO DON'T FORGET YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK A STEP, DECREASE TIME, AND/OR DECREASE DISTANCE IF IT IS REQUIRED.

Homework Schedule:

Calming Exercises (you can either rotate sit on the dog with long place OR just practice the long place):

  1. (SAME) Sit on The Dog 30 + minutes Goal:  To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under.  Last Change:  Work with distractions this week like the YouTube Audio files that we were working on in the lesson.  Leash can be dropped or held depending on how distracting that is for your dog.

  2. (SAME) Long Place 30 minutes Goal:  To get your dog accustomed to staying on a place for 30 minutes.  Last Change:  Work with distractions this week like the YouTube Audio files that we were working on in the lesson.  Leash can be dropped or held depending on how distracting that is for your dog.

Obedience Exercises:
  1. (NEW)  Start working obedience command by mixing them up.  15 minutes   Goal: At first just to practice these with leash held or dragging.   Eventually to be able to get four sets of everything.  Before that though, you could start just counting the reps of one command each time later.  Maybe rotating the command that you try to reach the goal in each time.  Finally at much later on, try to get four patterns in a row.

  2. (NEW) Get your dog used to having their paws handled in preparation for later nail clipping.  5 minutes Goal:  To eventually get to three sets of four in a row where your dog is totally unconcerned about this.  Also remember when you go to clip your dog's nails, that you can do one a day so it is not so stressful.

  3. (NEW) Flirt Pole Play (also useful for out command and actually other commands in the future) 5 minutes or less to start Goal:  At first, you want to play with your dog and encourage them to get the toy.  When you are ready, stop play and try "dead man's out" if you need to.  The brand to look for is SQUISHY FACE
  4. (CHANGE USE) Let's Go 5 minutes + Goal:  To eventually get 3 sets of four in a row NOTE:  CASCO WAS HAVING TROUBLE WITH THIS ONE SO MAKE SURE YOU GET TO THE GOAL AND TIME IT.  WHEN YOU START TO GET FOUR IN A ROW OF THESE, START PRACTICING THEM AT THE WINDOWS WHERE HE CAN SEE OUTSIDE.  YOU MAY NEED TO PRACTICE WITH HIM LEASHED AT FIRST (WITH YOU HOLDING THE LEASH.

  5. (SAME) Recall or Come Reps 5 + minutes Goal:  To eventually get 3 sets of 4 in a row.  I FORGOT TO CHECK ON THIS.  IF YOU PRACTICE THIS IN A PATTERN, I WOULD NOT INCLUDE LET'S GO IN THE PATTERN.  ONCE YOU CAN GET YOUR GOALS, YOU CAN THEN STAND STILL FOR A COME HOLDING THE LEASH.  AFTER THAT, YOU CAN TRY INSIDE WITH HIM DRAGGING A LEASH.
  6. (CHANGED) Out Command With Ball Play and Food Reward for out 5 minutes or less Goal:  To eventually get 3 sets of 4 in a row.  Week 6 Change:  We work on a tug ball (two balls attached together.   Remember that we are practicing "dead man's out" in that we are staying still and quiet, not tugging on the ball, and not letting the dog take the ball.

  7. (SAME) Molded Downs 15 minutes or less (50 reps a day) Goal:  Just get your dog used to sliding their legs out when you are handling them.  Also your dog will probably start sliding their feet out as you take position towards the end of the week.  NOTE:  I ALSO FORGOT TO FINISH THIS WITH YOU.   I WILL HAVE THE DIRECTIONS THAT FOLLOW THIS ON YOUR BLOG.

  8. (CHANGED)  Attention to Name 5 minutes or less Goal:  To eventually be able to get three sets of four in a row prompt looks at you.  Week 6 Change:  Extend the time now (start with 5 seconds) or work around distractions (start with inside distractions first).

  9. (SAME) Heeling and Sits with Correction if Needed 10 minutes Goal:  To get each string ending with a few good paces of good position between you and your dog and then teaching your dog to sit as you stop.  Also to get 3 sets of four sits in a row without needing to correct.

  10. (SAME)  Approach by Friendly Stranger 5 minutes or less Goal:  To be able to get four of these in a row.

  11. (SLIGHT CHANGE) Send to Place 5+minutes Goal:  To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets.  Last  Change:  Work with the audio files as a distraction (or anything challenging for your dog to work around but not overly challenging).  Also start stopping before the place for your dog to walk on themselves.

  12. (SAME) Circle Place 5 + minutes Goal:  To eventually get 4 in a row without needing correction for 1 minute. Remember to work with distractions such as the audio files with the leash dropped and you walking around the room.
